EHS Services - Implementation
Assistance
Background. Most companies seeking to improve their
EHS management systems (e.g., in advance of seeking ISO 14001
certification) usually require some degree of assistance in the
design, development, critique, roll-out, training, and/or evaluation
of one or more parts of their management system. The amount and
type of such "implementation" assistance that is necessary
depends on many factors, including the extent to which systems
are already in place, the types of weaknesses noted in existing
systems (e.g., resulting from audits/assessments), the degree
of experience that company staff have with such systems, and the
resources available internally to make modifications to the system
in the necessary timeframe. Companies vary widely in the type
and amount of assistance needed.
KCI Expertise. KCI has broad experience in this area,
having helped companies implement a wide variety of EHS management
systems, providing everything from simple telephone assistance
on an on-call basis, to working full-time at client sites for
many weeks. Examples of the types of implementation assistance
we have provided include:
- Critique of company E (or EHS) policy
- Development of policies
- Development of guidance
- Development of procedures
- Development of standard tools, forms, and templates for use
across the company
- Critique of existing information technology systems for EHS
management
- Development of software or information technology solutions
for EHS management
- Development of plans (e.g., Training plan, Contingency plan,
Emergency response plan)
- Development of aspects/impacts methodologies and conducting
aspects/impacts evaluations
- Restructuring/reorganization of EHS organization
- Training on specific company requirements and/or aspects
of the management system
Description of a recent project. For a major US manufacturer
of mailing equipment, KCI provided 'on-call' assistance in the
critique, development, and improvement of existing environmental
management systems, in order to prepare the company for upcoming
ISO 14001 certification. Efforts involved in this project included
providing advice on the types of documentation that must be maintained,
developing corporate environmental procedures, developing specific
management systems tools and templates, onsite review of existing
systems, and critiquing initial implementations of new systems
by facility personnel.
